Abandoned carts: what the research says and what an Instagram shop can fix

About 70 percent of carts are abandoned, and 42 percent of the shoppers who left a cart were only browsing. Why the rest left, and what an Instagram shop can fix this week.

Abandoned cart: a lone empty metal shopping cart standing in an empty dark lot

An abandoned cart in an Instagram shop is usually a DM that went quiet after the price, or an order link that was opened and never paid. The Baymard Institute, averaging 50 studies, puts documented cart abandonment at about 70 percent. That figure comes from online stores, not Instagram DMs, and we found no credible number for DMs. The reasons it measured still fit a conversation.

How much of an abandoned cart can you win back?

Less than you would hope. Baymard found that 42 percent of US shoppers who abandoned a cart said they were just browsing, and no message brings those people back. The other reasons come only from people who left during checkout, with several answers allowed, so the percentages do not add up to a hundred. It is one link in the chain that growing online shop sales lays out end to end.

What the reasons look like on an Instagram page

The same reasons, inside a conversation. The table pairs Baymard's share with what it looks like in a DM and the fix.

Reason (Baymard)In an Instagram shopThe fix
Extra costs 40%, total unclear 12%Price quoted, shipping appears after the addressGive the final total in the first message
Delivery too slow 20%"When does it arrive?" left unansweredState a clear delivery window
Did not trust the site with card details 19%An account number sent in a DM by a page the buyer does not knowSend a payment link instead
Forced account 18%, long checkout 17%Ten questions in a row: name, address, postcode, sizeCollect address and payment on one page
Returns policy unsatisfactory 13%"Can I return it?" left unansweredOne written line in a highlight
Site errors 17%, card declined 10%The payment link fails to openTest it on another phone and keep a second way to pay

Three of these rows, the total, the delivery window and the returns rule, cost one line of text.

State the total and the delivery window before the link

Your first answer should carry the final total with shipping and a clear delivery window: extra costs are the biggest reason people leave (40 percent) and slow delivery comes second (20 percent). A fee revealed after the address is exactly the extra cost Baymard recorded. Who pays for shipping is covered in shipping costs for an online shop; the rule here is to say the number before you ask for the address.

A payment link. Baymard found that 19 percent of checkout abandoners did not trust the site with card details. That was measured on websites; that a bare account number from an unknown page is worse is our reading, not their figure. More on why in payment links on Instagram and customer trust on Instagram. ProMall lets the buyer finish address, delivery and payment on one order page instead of ten messages.

Follow up once, inside 24 hours

Send one useful message, within 24 hours of the customer's last message, and only when you have something new to say. Meta does not let a tool message the person after that window, so a second and third "are you there?" is either rejected or just pressure.

The follow-up in ProMall's Smart Direct campaigns is just as narrow: one text after the campaign's last DM if the person has not replied, only inside the 24-hour window. It covers campaigns, not every quiet conversation. The window rules are in automatic replies in Instagram DMs.

Where to start tomorrow morning

  1. 1Open the last twenty chats that went quiet after a price and write down each one's last unanswered question.
  2. 2Group them: cost, delivery, trust or returns.
  3. 3Put the answer to the biggest group into your first message, then compare price requests with paid orders a week later.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my own abandoned cart rate?

Count the chats that asked for a price, subtract the paid orders and divide by the first number. If forty people asked and ten paid, the rate is 75 percent. That is only an example; use your own counts.

Can I message a customer after 24 hours?

Not with a tool. Meta only allows a business message within 24 hours of the customer's last message, and an automated message after that is rejected. If the customer writes again, the window restarts.

What do I say to someone who says they will think about it?

Ask a question that takes one word to answer, such as whether shipping or price was the worry. You learn the real reason, and one reply is enough; a second and third message usually reads as pressure.

How long should I hold stock for an unpaid order?

Set a deadline and say it in the message, such as until tomorrow night. If stock reservation is on, registering an order holds that size for this buyer, so do not leave the deadline open-ended; when it passes, cancel the order or follow up once.
